What Is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition that hinders a person’s ability to function normally in day-to-day life. OCD is characterized by intrusive thoughts, fears, and compulsive, repetitive behaviors.

People with OCD typically display symptoms of obsessive and or compulsive behaviors. Obsessions are repetitive and intrusive thoughts, images, or urges. They may include things like germs or harming themselves or others.

At Restoring Wellness Solutions, we know how quickly this condition can become debilitating if left untreated. That’s why we are committed to treating not just the symptoms but also the underlying condition in our patients.

Obsessions

Obsessions are repetitive and persistent thoughts, urges, or images that cause extreme anxiety. People with OCD typically obsess over the fear of germs, need things to be in a particular order, or have aggressive thoughts that center around harming themselves or others. Examples include obsessive hand washing, fear that the stove was left on before leaving for work, or the urge to veer the car into oncoming traffic.

Compulsions

Compulsions are repetitive behaviors that someone with OCD feels compelled to do. Often they are done in an attempt to reduce anxiety but often aren’t entirely effective or long-lasting. The rules are usually made up by a person with OCD and have no real meaning behind them. Compulsions may include excessive cleaning, checking, or counting.

Severity

OCD most commonly begins during the teen or early adult years, and severity often ranges. Obsessions and compulsions can also differ over time, meaning someone may fixate on excessive hand washing in their youth but become obsessive about being orderly as they age. Even with treatment, OCD is a lifelong disorder, but its symptoms can be managed with the team's help at Restoring Wellness Solutions.
